A formal Neoclassical portrait of Catherine II of Russia, depicted as a wise legislator within an allegorical temple setting.
Dmitry Levitzky painted this work in 1783, capturing Empress Catherine II of Russia in an allegorical setting. The composition presents the monarch not in traditional imperial regalia, but as a wise legislator. She stands within the Temple of the Goddess of Justice, a setting that reflects the Enlightenment ideals Catherine sought to project during her reign.
In the painting, the Empress performs a symbolic act of sacrifice, placing poppy flowers into a fire on an altar. This gesture represents her willingness to sacrifice personal interests for the benefit of the state. Beside her sits a statue of Themis, the Greek personification of divine law and order. The background includes a glimpse of a ship at sea, which alludes to the naval successes and the expansion of the Russian Empire under her rule.
Levitzky demonstrates technical mastery in his handling of textures, particularly the sheen of the Empress's white silk dress and the heavy, draped fabric that frames the scene. The lighting is theatrical, directing the viewer's attention to the Empress while casting the surrounding architectural elements in shadow. The palette is dominated by warm ochres, deep reds, and the stark white of the subject's gown, creating a sense of balance and formal composure. This portrait remains a primary example of the Russian Neoclassical style, where the subject is elevated through classical iconography and deliberate, staged symbolism. The work is currently held in the collection of the State Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow.
