A detailed sixteenth-century engraving by Johann Bussemacher depicting Charles the Bald within an ornate frame and narrative scene.
This engraving by Johann Bussemacher depicts Charles the Bald, the ninth-century Carolingian monarch. Produced in the late sixteenth century, the work reflects the conventions of historical portraiture common in German printmaking of the period. The central medallion presents the ruler in profile, wearing a crown and period-appropriate attire, surrounded by a decorative frame. The artist employs precise line work to define the facial features and the texture of the garments, typical of the copperplate engraving techniques utilised by Bussemacher in Cologne.
Below the portrait, a smaller rectangular scene provides a narrative element, showing a figure within a tented encampment. This secondary image adds context to the royal subject, grounding the portrait in a historical or military setting. The surrounding border features scrollwork and foliate motifs, which frame the composition and provide a sense of balance. The text integrated into the print, written in early modern German, identifies the subject and provides biographical details, consistent with the educational and historical function of such prints in the sixteenth century.
Johann Bussemacher was a publisher and engraver based in Cologne, known for his contributions to historical and topographical series. His work often combined portraiture with descriptive text to inform the reader about figures from antiquity or the medieval era. This print is an example of the intersection between book illustration and independent print production, where the aesthetic quality of the engraving supports the historical narrative. The clarity of the lines and the structured layout demonstrate the technical proficiency required for such detailed work. This piece offers a glimpse into how historical figures were visualised and disseminated in print culture during the late Renaissance, providing a record of how the Carolingian past was interpreted by later generations.
