A detailed seventeenth-century engraving by Lucas Vorsterman depicting the Flemish painter Cornelis de Vos, based on a portrait by Anthony van Dyck.
This engraving depicts the Flemish painter Cornelis de Vos, a contemporary of Anthony van Dyck. The print belongs to the Iconography, a collection of portraits of famous individuals from the seventeenth century. Lucas Vorsterman, a skilled engraver who worked closely with Peter Paul Rubens, executed this plate after a painting by Van Dyck. The inscription at the base identifies the subject as Cornelis de Vos, a painter of portraits and historical subjects in Antwerp.
Vorsterman employs a sophisticated system of line work to define the form and texture of the subject. The hatching and cross-hatching techniques create a sense of volume in the sitter's doublet and the folds of his cloak. The face is rendered with particular attention to the play of light, capturing the sitter's expression with clarity. The background consists of horizontal lines, which provide a neutral field that allows the figure to emerge from the surface of the paper. This technique was common in seventeenth-century printmaking, as it provided a clean, readable image suitable for inclusion in biographical volumes.
The composition follows the conventions of the period, presenting the sitter in a three-quarter view. His hand is positioned near his waist, a gesture that adds a sense of naturalism to the formal portrait. The inclusion of the artist's name, the painter's name, and the privilege statement at the bottom of the sheet reflects the professional standards of the Antwerp print trade. This work remains a fine example of the technical precision achieved by Flemish engravers during the Baroque era, demonstrating a mastery of the burin that allowed for the subtle gradation of tone and texture. It is a document of both the artistic community in Antwerp and the collaborative nature of print production in the seventeenth century.
