Vincent van Gogh's 'Portrait of Doctor Gachet' (1890) captures the physician Paul Gachet, who cared for the artist in his final months. The painting is characterised by its emotional intensity and swirling brushstrokes.
Painted in 1890, Vincent van Gogh's 'Portrait of Doctor Gachet' depicts Paul Gachet, a physician who cared for the artist during his final months in Auvers-sur-Oise. There are two versions of the portrait; this one resides in the Musée d'Orsay, Paris. Gachet was an amateur artist himself, and Van Gogh found a kindred spirit in him, writing to his brother Theo that he had found someone who was 'as ill as I am'. The painting shows Gachet seated at a red table, his head resting on his right hand in a melancholic pose. A sprig of purple foxglove, a plant used to make digitalis (a heart medication), sits on the table. Van Gogh's characteristic swirling brushstrokes and use of colour create a sense of emotional intensity. The blues in the background and Gachet's jacket contrast with the red table, heightening the overall feeling of unease and introspection. The portrait is not merely a likeness; it is an exploration of the doctor's character and perhaps a reflection of Van Gogh's own mental state.
