Vincent van Gogh's 1889 portrait of Dr. Félix Rey, the physician who treated him in Arles, is a striking example of Post-Impressionist portraiture, characterised by bold colours and expressive brushwork.
Painted in 1889, Vincent van Gogh's portrait of Dr. Félix Rey offers a glimpse into the artist's life in Arles, France. Rey was a young physician who treated Van Gogh at the hospital following one of his mental health crises. Van Gogh painted this portrait as a gift to Dr. Rey, though the doctor and his family reportedly did not care for the painting and used it to patch a chicken coop for a time. The painting is now held by the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts in Moscow. The portrait shows Dr. Rey in a dark blue suit with red buttons, set against a swirling green background. Van Gogh's signature brushstrokes are evident in the application of paint, creating texture and movement. The doctor's face is rendered with a yellow tone, and his features are sharply defined. The background pattern, with its arabesque forms, adds a decorative element that contrasts with the realism of the portrait itself. The painting is signed and dated in red on the lower right, adding a personal touch to the work.
