A detailed sixteenth-century engraving by Theodor de Bry, depicting the Italian jurist Filippo Decio within an ornate, decorative cartouche.
This engraving by Theodor de Bry depicts the Italian jurist Filippo Decio in profile. The subject is rendered with the precision characteristic of late sixteenth-century printmaking, capturing the texture of his academic cap and the folds of his robes through controlled hatching and cross-hatching techniques. De Bry, a master engraver and publisher, was known for his technical skill in producing portrait series that circulated among the European intellectual elite.
The portrait is framed within an oval cartouche, a common device in Renaissance book illustration. This frame is adorned with scrolling foliate motifs and small cherubic heads, which provide a decorative contrast to the austere profile of the jurist. Below the portrait, a rectangular tablet contains a Latin inscription, which serves to identify the subject and provide a brief eulogistic sentiment regarding his contributions to legal scholarship. The composition reflects the conventions of the period, where the sitter is presented as a figure of authority and learning.
De Bry's work is notable for its clarity and the balance between the central figure and the surrounding ornamentation. The engraving demonstrates the high level of craftsmanship required for mass-produced printed media during this era. By employing a refined line quality, the artist achieves a sense of volume and depth within the limited space of the oval frame. This print offers a glimpse into the visual culture of the Renaissance, where portraiture functioned as a means of documenting the lives of scholars and public figures for a wider audience. The work remains a clear example of the technical standards maintained by the De Bry workshop in Frankfurt, which became a centre for high-quality engraving during the late sixteenth century.
