A refined engraving by Martin Schongauer, featuring the Virgin Mary beside a lily, rendered with precise cross-hatching and characteristic late Gothic grace.
This engraving by Martin Schongauer depicts the Virgin Mary in a moment of quiet contemplation, a subject frequently explored in late fifteenth-century German art. Schongauer, a master of the burin, demonstrates his technical precision through the varied density of his cross-hatching, which creates a sense of volume in the heavy folds of the Virgin's drapery. Her posture is gentle, with one hand resting upon her chest and the other holding a prayer book, suggesting a narrative pause during the Annunciation.
To her side, a lily plant rises from a metal vessel. This botanical element functions as a traditional symbol of purity associated with the Virgin. The artist renders the leaves and flowers with careful attention to natural form, balancing the figure of Mary with the verticality of the plant. The composition is contained within a clear, shallow space, typical of Schongauer's approach to engraving, where the focus remains on the clarity of the line and the expressive quality of the figure's features.
Schongauer's signature, the M+S monogram, appears at the base of the print. This mark became a standard for quality in printmaking across Europe during the period. The work reflects the transition from late Gothic sensibilities toward the more defined spatial awareness of the Northern Renaissance. The print captures a sense of stillness, achieved through the rhythmic flow of the lines and the balanced arrangement of the subject matter. It remains a primary example of the high level of craftsmanship achieved by German printmakers before the turn of the sixteenth century.
