A classic double portrait by Domenico Ghirlandaio, depicting the Florentine banker Francesco Sassetti with his son, rendered with Renaissance precision.
Domenico Ghirlandaio, a master of the Florentine Renaissance, produced this double portrait during the late fifteenth century. The work depicts Francesco Sassetti, a prominent banker and associate of the Medici family, alongside his young son, Teodoro. Ghirlandaio employs a clear, balanced composition that reflects the humanist values of the period. The figures are positioned against a backdrop that includes a distant view of a harbour, a common device in Florentine portraiture to suggest the subject's worldly connections and status.
Francesco Sassetti is shown in a sober, dark garment, his expression composed and serious. His son, Teodoro, looks up towards him, creating a narrative link between the two figures. The boy wears a patterned tunic, which demonstrates the artist's attention to textile detail and the wealth of the Sassetti family. The lighting is even, allowing for a precise rendering of facial features and the textures of the clothing. Ghirlandaio was known for his ability to capture the likeness of his sitters while maintaining a sense of decorum and dignity.
This portrait is representative of the shift towards naturalism in Italian art. The artist avoids excessive ornamentation, focusing instead on the psychological presence of the sitters. The background landscape, while simplified, provides a sense of depth and atmosphere. The work remains a clear example of the portraiture style favoured by the merchant class in Florence, where the display of family lineage and professional success was of great importance. The original panel is currently held in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. This fine art print captures the clarity and technical precision of Ghirlandaio's original painting, offering a view into the social and artistic climate of the Italian Renaissance.
