A detailed sixteenth-century engraving by Theodor de Bry, depicting the scholar Franciscus Modius within an architectural frame.
This engraving by Theodor de Bry depicts the humanist and jurist Franciscus Modius. De Bry, a Flemish engraver and goldsmith, was active in the late sixteenth century and is recognised for his technical precision in copperplate engraving. The portrait captures Modius in a formal pose, typical of the period, wearing a ruff and doublet. His hand rests upon a table, near a small wreath, while his gaze is directed towards the viewer. The composition is framed by an architectural arch adorned with floral motifs, a common decorative element in Renaissance portraiture.
The print demonstrates the controlled line work characteristic of de Bry's output. The shading is achieved through cross-hatching, which provides volume to the figure and depth to the drapery of his clothing. The inclusion of Latin text within the image, both in the arch and on the cartouche at the base, serves to identify the subject and provide a brief eulogy. This format was standard for scholarly portraits of the era, intended to circulate among intellectuals and collectors.
Franciscus Modius (1556-1597) was a scholar from Bruges known for his work in law and classical literature. De Bry's depiction reflects the status of the subject, presenting him as a man of learning and professional standing. The attention to detail in the costume, from the texture of the ruff to the buttons on the doublet, illustrates the engraver's ability to render material surfaces with clarity. This work is an example of the print culture that allowed for the dissemination of portraits of notable figures across Europe during the late sixteenth century.
