A delicate Rococo pastel portrait by Rosalba Carriera, depicting the Duchess of Orléans as the sea goddess Amphitrite.
Rosalba Carriera, a Venetian artist, gained international recognition for her mastery of the pastel medium. This work depicts Françoise Marie de Bourbon, the Duchess of Orléans, in the guise of Amphitrite, the mythological sea goddess. The choice of mythological allegory was a common practice in eighteenth-century portraiture, allowing the sitter to be associated with divine attributes while maintaining a sense of aristocratic grace.
Carriera employs a delicate application of pastel, which allows for the soft transitions of tone seen in the skin and the ethereal quality of the drapery. The composition is oval, a format frequently utilised by the artist for her intimate portrait miniatures and larger pastel works. The blue of the fabric provides a contrast to the pale, luminous flesh tones, while the inclusion of floral elements in the hair adds a touch of naturalistic detail. The figures are rendered with a lightness of touch that defines the Rococo aesthetic, moving away from the heavier, more formal styles of the preceding century.
During her time in Paris in 1720 and 1721, Carriera was highly sought after by the French nobility. Her ability to capture a likeness while imbuing the subject with a sense of softness and charm made her one of the most successful portraitists of her era. This specific work demonstrates her technical skill in blending colours directly on the paper, creating a smooth, almost painterly effect that belies the dry nature of the medium. The focus remains on the gentle interaction between the figures, presented with a clarity that avoids excessive ornamentation, allowing the focus to remain on the subjects themselves.
