A detailed 1755 engraving by Catharina van Noorde depicting the Dutch painter Frans Decker, complete with his artist's tools.
This engraving, executed by Catharina van Noorde in 1755, depicts the Dutch painter Frans Decker. The composition follows the tradition of the commemorative portrait, presenting the subject within a trompe l'oeil frame that mimics a stone plinth. Decker is shown in a three-quarter view, wearing a soft cap and period attire, with his gaze directed towards the viewer.
At the base of the portrait, van Noorde includes the tools of the artist's trade: a palette, a bundle of brushes, and a rolled canvas. These elements serve to identify the sitter's profession. The plinth features an inscription by P. Merkman, which praises Decker's skill and dedication to his craft. The engraving technique demonstrates a high level of precision, particularly in the rendering of the textures of the clothing and the subtle shading of the facial features.
Catharina van Noorde was a notable engraver of the eighteenth century, often producing works that documented the lives and appearances of her contemporaries. This print is based on an earlier drawing by F. Jelgersma, as noted in the lower margin. The work provides a clear record of Decker's appearance and the professional identity associated with painters of the period. The clean lines and balanced composition are characteristic of the printmaking standards of the mid-eighteenth-century Netherlands, where such portraits were frequently collected for albums or as independent decorative pieces. The inclusion of the artist's tools acts as a visual shorthand for the creative process, grounding the portrait in the reality of the studio environment.
