A striking portrait of the poet and monk Fray Hortensio Felix Paravicino, painted by El Greco in his characteristic late style.
This portrait depicts Fray Hortensio Felix Paravicino, a Trinitarian monk and a noted poet of the Spanish Golden Age. Painted by El Greco during his final years in Toledo, the work captures the sitter in a seated position, wearing the black and white habit of his order. The artist employs a restricted palette, focusing on the stark contrast between the dark monastic robes and the luminous white collar.
El Greco uses elongated proportions and expressive brushwork to convey the intellectual intensity of the subject. Paravicino holds a book, suggesting his scholarly pursuits and his role as a preacher. The background remains dark and indistinct, which pushes the figure forward and focuses the viewer on the sitter's gaze. The handling of the fabric, particularly the folds of the white habit, demonstrates the artist's ability to manipulate light and shadow to create volume.
Paravicino was a close friend of the artist and even composed sonnets in his honour. This personal connection is reflected in the psychological depth of the portrait. The sitter appears alert, with a direct, penetrating look that engages the viewer. The composition is structured around the vertical axis of the figure, balanced by the horizontal placement of the book. This piece remains a primary example of the artist's late style, characterised by a departure from strict naturalism in favour of a more subjective, spiritualised representation of the human form. The work is currently held in the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
