A formal state portrait of Frederick I of Prussia by court painter Antoine Pesne, capturing the monarch in regal attire.
This portrait depicts Frederick I of Prussia, the first King in Prussia, seated in a formal pose that communicates his royal status. Antoine Pesne, a French painter who became the court artist in Berlin, captures the monarch with the characteristic grandeur of the early eighteenth century. The composition follows the conventions of state portraiture, placing the subject in a position of authority while surrounded by symbols of his office.
Frederick I is shown wearing an elaborate costume, complete with a heavy ermine-lined cloak that drapes across the chair and onto the floor. His attire includes intricate embroidery and the insignia of the Order of the Black Eagle, which he founded in 1701. The artist employs a dramatic use of light and shadow, typical of the Baroque period, to draw attention to the monarch's face and the textures of his clothing. The background remains somewhat obscured, allowing the figure of the King to occupy the primary visual space. The inclusion of the sceptre held in his right hand reinforces his role as a sovereign ruler.
Pesne arrived in Prussia in 1710 and quickly gained favour with the royal court. His ability to render the textures of velvet, fur, and metal with precision made him a preferred choice for royal commissions. This work provides a clear view of the aesthetic preferences of the Prussian court during the reign of Frederick I. The painting remains a primary example of how European monarchs utilised portraiture to project power and stability to their subjects and international peers. The work is held in the collection of the Stiftung Preußische Schlösser und Gärten Berlin-Brandenburg.
