A detailed seventeenth-century engraving by Samuel Blesendorf, depicting Frederick William I, the Great Elector of Brandenburg, in formal military attire.
This engraving by Samuel Blesendorf depicts Frederick William I, the Elector of Brandenburg, often referred to as the Great Elector. Blesendorf, a German engraver and miniaturist active in Berlin, produced this work during a period when the Electorate of Brandenburg was consolidating its political and military power within the Holy Roman Empire. The portrait follows the conventions of seventeenth-century state portraiture, presenting the subject within an oval frame that rests upon a stone plinth.
The Elector is shown wearing armour, which signifies his role as a military leader, complemented by the elaborate periwig characteristic of the late seventeenth-century European aristocracy. The composition includes a draped mantle, which adds a sense of theatricality and grandeur to the presentation. Above the oval frame, a crown and crossed swords serve as symbols of his sovereign authority and martial status. The Latin inscription on the plinth identifies the subject as 'Fridericus Wilhelmus Magnus, Elector Brandenburgicus', reinforcing his historical identity.
Blesendorf demonstrates technical precision in his handling of the burin, particularly in the rendering of the metallic textures of the armour and the soft, voluminous curls of the wig. The shading techniques create a sense of volume and depth, typical of the high Baroque style. The print is a fine example of the reproductive engraving tradition, where such works were disseminated to project the image of the ruler to a wider audience. The clarity of the lines and the balanced composition reflect the formal requirements of courtly portraiture during this era. This print offers a view into the visual culture of the Prussian court, capturing the aesthetic values and the political iconography of the time.
