A formal eighteenth-century engraving of Frederick William II, King of Prussia, featuring the monarch in profile with royal regalia.
This engraving by the Dutch artist Theodoor Koning depicts Frederick William II, King of Prussia, in profile. The work follows the conventions of eighteenth-century portraiture, where the subject is presented within a formal oval frame. The composition includes symbolic elements, such as the royal crown and a sceptre resting upon a stone plinth, which denote the status of the monarch. The inscription at the base identifies the sitter as the King of Prussia, a common practice in period printmaking to ensure the subject was recognisable to the viewer.
Koning employs precise line work to define the features of the King, including his powdered wig and the details of his military uniform. The shading within the oval frame provides a sense of volume, while the background behind the frame is rendered with a cross-hatched pattern that creates a subtle contrast. The use of a plinth as a base for the portrait frame is a stylistic choice that adds a sense of architectural stability to the image. This type of print was often produced for inclusion in historical volumes or as a standalone portrait for collectors of royal iconography.
The technical execution reflects the skill required for copperplate engraving during the late eighteenth century. The artist manages the transition between the soft textures of the clothing and the harder surfaces of the stone plinth and metallic regalia. The overall presentation is restrained and formal, consistent with the Neoclassical aesthetic that favoured clarity and order. This print offers a clear view of the visual language used to represent European royalty during the period, focusing on the attributes of power and the specific likeness of the individual. It remains a representative example of Dutch printmaking from the late 1700s.
