This portrait of Georges Arnold Fitzwilliam is a characteristic example of the work produced by Charles Balthazar Julien Fevret de Saint-Mémin during his period of exile in the United States. Saint-Mémin, a French aristocrat who fled the French Revolution, developed a specific method for creating these profile likenesses. He utilised a physiognotrace, a mechanical device that allowed him to trace the sitter's profile with precision, before refining the details by hand using black and white chalk on paper prepared with a pink wash.
The resulting image presents a clear, clinical observation of the subject. The profile view, a convention favoured in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, allows for an accurate recording of facial features. The artist employs white chalk to create highlights on the bridge of the nose, the chin, and the cravat, providing a sense of volume against the flat, pink background. The shading is applied with restraint, focusing on the contours of the face and the texture of the hair.
Saint-Mémin's practice was highly commercial, catering to a growing American middle class eager for affordable, accurate portraiture. These works were often produced in sets, with the artist providing the client with a copperplate engraving based on the original drawing. This specific piece demonstrates the artist's technical proficiency in capturing the likeness of his contemporaries. The composition is contained within an oval format, a common choice for portrait miniatures and drawings of the era, which directs the viewer's attention entirely to the subject's features.
