A portrait of a woman in a black hat, painted in bold, non-naturalistic colours with loose, expressive brushwork, typical of Kirchner's Expressionist style.
Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, a German Expressionist painter and printmaker, was a founder of the artists group Die Brücke (The Bridge), a key group leading to the foundation of Expressionism in 20th-century art. He volunteered for army service in the First World War, but soon suffered a breakdown and was discharged. In 1937, his work was branded as 'degenerate' by the Nazis, and over 600 of his works were removed from German museums. He committed suicide in 1938. This portrait of Gerda shows a woman in a black hat adorned with a red flower, set against a background of swirling blues and greens. The sitter wears a bright blue jacket with black lapels. Kirchner's use of colour is bold and non-naturalistic, with the skin tones rendered in shades of orange, yellow, and pink. The brushwork is loose and expressive, contributing to the emotional intensity of the work. The composition is relatively simple, focusing on the figure and her immediate surroundings, with the background serving to enhance the overall mood.
