A 1895 lithographic profile portrait of the Dutch marine painter Hendrik Willem Mesdag, created by Jan Veth for the publication De Kroniek.
This lithographic portrait depicts the Dutch marine painter Hendrik Willem Mesdag in profile. Executed by Jan Veth in 1895, the work appeared as a supplement to the publication De Kroniek. Veth, a painter and art critic, possessed a keen ability to capture the psychological presence of his subjects through precise draughtsmanship. The profile view allows for a clear observation of Mesdag's features, including his beard and the hat he wears, rendered with a consistent, fine-lined technique that mimics the texture of a pencil drawing.
The print is monochromatic, utilising a warm, sepia-toned ink that provides a sense of age and classicism. The composition is contained within a simple rectangular border, typical of the period's print culture. The text at the top identifies the series, Portretten van De Kroniek, while the lower margin provides the subject's name. Veth's approach to portraiture avoids unnecessary ornamentation, focusing instead on the structural integrity of the face and the character of the sitter. The artist's signature and the date, V '95, appear in the lower left corner, confirming the period of production.
Mesdag himself was a central figure in the Hague School, known for his expansive seascapes. Veth captures him at the age of 64, as noted by the inscription A.T. 64 in the upper left. This portrait offers a glimpse into the intellectual and artistic circles of late nineteenth-century Netherlands, where painters often documented their peers. The print is a fine example of the intersection between journalism and portrait art during this era, providing a direct, unadorned record of a significant figure in Dutch art history.
