A detailed seventeenth-century engraving by Theodor Matham depicting the Dutch physician and philosopher Henricus Regius.
This engraving by Theodor Matham depicts Henricus Regius (1598-1679), a Dutch physician and philosopher known for his association with Cartesian thought at the University of Utrecht. Matham, a member of a prominent family of engravers, demonstrates the technical precision characteristic of the Dutch Golden Age. The portrait captures the subject in a three-quarter view, his gaze directed toward the viewer with a composed expression.
The artist employs a sophisticated system of cross-hatching to define the contours of the face and the texture of the clothing. The background consists of a fine, uniform grid pattern, a common convention in seventeenth-century portrait prints to isolate the figure and provide a neutral contrast. The subject wears the attire of a seventeenth-century academic, featuring a dark doublet with a white collar and tassels. His hand is tucked into his garment, a gesture of restraint and dignity often seen in portraiture of the period.
Matham studied under his father, Adriaen Matham, and later spent time in Rome, where he refined his ability to render light and volume through line work. This print reflects the standard of portraiture produced for scholarly circles, where the likeness of a thinker was disseminated through engravings to accompany publications or circulate among peers. The clarity of the line work and the balanced composition reflect the disciplined approach of the Dutch printmaking tradition. This museum-grade reproduction preserves the tonal variations of the original copperplate engraving, offering a clear view of the artist's mastery of the burin.
