A detailed seventeenth-century engraving by Gérard Edelinck, depicting the artist Israël Silvestre within an oval frame, accompanied by a Parisian cityscape.
This engraving by Gérard Edelinck depicts the French draughtsman and etcher Israël Silvestre. Edelinck, a Flemish engraver who spent much of his career in Paris, was highly regarded for his technical precision and ability to translate the tonal qualities of oil paintings into the medium of copperplate engraving. The portrait is based on a painting by Charles Le Brun, whose signature appears on the plate.
The composition follows the conventions of seventeenth-century portraiture. Silvestre is presented within an oval frame, his gaze directed toward the viewer. He wears the voluminous periwig characteristic of the period, which frames his face and cascades over his shoulders. The drapery of his clothing is rendered with fine, rhythmic lines that suggest the weight and texture of the fabric.
Below the portrait, a cartouche contains a detailed cityscape of Paris, specifically showing the Pont Neuf and the surrounding architecture. This inclusion serves as a visual reference to Silvestre's own professional output, as he was well known for his topographical prints of French cities and monuments. The surrounding elements, including drafting tools such as a compass and set square, further identify the subject as an artist and architect. The precision of the cross-hatching and the subtle modulation of light across the face demonstrate Edelinck's mastery of the burin. The work is a fine example of the collaborative nature of print production in the French court, where painters and engravers worked in tandem to disseminate the likenesses of notable figures.
