A nineteenth-century lithographic portrait of Dutch naval officer Jan Carel Josephus van Speyk, featuring formal military attire and commemorative text.
This lithograph depicts Jan Carel Josephus van Speyk (1802-1831), a Dutch naval officer who became a national figure following his actions during the Belgian Revolution. The portrait captures him in his formal naval uniform, complete with epaulettes and medals, reflecting the military discipline of the era. The artist, J.B. Clermans, employs a soft, tonal approach characteristic of early nineteenth-century lithography, using delicate shading to model the subject's features and the texture of his attire.
The print includes a detailed inscription below the portrait, identifying the subject as a Lieutenant at sea and a Knight of the Military William Order. It notes his birth in Amsterdam and his death in Antwerp in February 1831. The text also indicates that the work was dedicated to the Dutch Navy on the occasion of the ceremonial interment of his remains in the Nieuwe Kerk in Amsterdam on 4 May 1832. This context places the print within the commemorative culture of the Netherlands during the post-revolutionary period, where such portraits served to honour individuals perceived as heroes of the state.
Visually, the composition is centred, with the figure emerging from a soft, vignetted background. This technique draws the viewer's attention to the subject's face, which is rendered with a sense of calm resolve. The typography below the image is formal and precise, typical of commemorative prints produced for public circulation. The inclusion of the official stamp from the Amsterdam library suggests the historical provenance of this specific impression. This piece offers a clear window into the visual language of Dutch nationalism and military iconography in the early 1830s, providing a record of both the individual and the commemorative practices of the time.
