A formal nineteenth-century engraving by Ambroise Tardieu depicting the French politician Jean-Marie Emmanuel Legraverend.
This engraving by Ambroise Tardieu depicts Jean-Marie Emmanuel Legraverend, a French politician who served as a deputy for the Ille-et-Vilaine department. The work is executed in the precise, linear style characteristic of early nineteenth-century French printmaking. Tardieu employs stipple and line engraving techniques to model the subject's features, creating a soft transition of tone within the oval frame.
Legraverend is shown in a bust-length format, wearing the formal attire of the period, including a high-collared coat and a cravat. The composition is restrained, focusing entirely on the sitter's expression and dignified posture. The oval vignette is set against a clean, unadorned background, which directs the viewer's attention to the facial details and the texture of the clothing. Below the portrait, the inscription identifies the sitter and his political role, noting his election in 1817. This type of print was common in the era for documenting public figures, often appearing in biographical collections or political records.
Tardieu was a skilled engraver known for his cartographic and portrait work. His ability to render subtle gradations of light and shadow through controlled hatching is evident here. The print maintains a formal, objective quality, typical of the era's approach to portraiture. The paper shows the natural ageing expected of a document from this period, adding to its historical character. This piece offers a clear view into the visual culture of the Bourbon Restoration, where portrait prints served as a primary means of disseminating the likenesses of government officials to the public.
