A formal copperplate engraving by Johann Martin Bernigeroth, depicting the official Johann Gottfried von Mayern in the style of the mid-eighteenth century.
This copperplate engraving by Johann Martin Bernigeroth depicts Johann Gottfried von Mayern, a figure of the early eighteenth-century German administration. Bernigeroth, a member of a prominent family of engravers based in Leipzig, was known for his technical precision in portraiture. The work follows the conventions of the era, presenting the subject within an oval frame, a common device in commemorative prints of the period.
The subject is shown in three-quarter view, wearing a voluminous periwig, which was the standard fashion for men of status at the time. His attire includes a cravat and a formal coat, rendered with careful attention to the texture of the fabric through varied line work. The oval frame is surrounded by decorative elements, including heraldic shields and foliage, which add a sense of formality to the composition. Below the portrait, a cartouche contains a German verse, a common inclusion in memorial or commemorative prints to honour the subject's character and professional life.
Technically, the print demonstrates the mastery of the burin. The artist uses cross-hatching and parallel lines to create depth and shadow, particularly in the folds of the clothing and the curls of the wig. The background of the oval is filled with fine, horizontal lines, which help to isolate the figure and draw the viewer's attention to the facial features. This piece provides a clear example of the mid-eighteenth-century German style of portrait engraving, where the focus remained on clarity, formal dignity, and the accurate representation of social rank. The print serves as a record of the visual culture of the period, reflecting the importance of the printed image in documenting the lives of officials and scholars.
