A striking late-career portrait by Gustav Klimt, featuring bold orange tones and a patterned blue garment.
This portrait of Johanna Staude, painted by Gustav Klimt between 1917 and 1918, represents one of the final works completed before the artist's death. The subject, a young woman associated with the Viennese avant-garde circles, is depicted with a direct, steady gaze that commands the viewer's attention. Klimt employs a bold, non-naturalistic colour palette, placing the figure against a striking, fiery orange background that contrasts sharply with the cool tones of her attire.
The sitter wears a distinctive blue garment, rendered with heavy, dark outlines and patterned segments that suggest a textile design influence. A voluminous black fur collar frames her face, creating a visual anchor that separates the detailed facial features from the more abstract treatment of the clothing. Klimt's technique here moves away from the gold-leaf ornamentation of his earlier career, favouring instead a more expressive, painterly approach. The brushwork is visible and immediate, reflecting a shift toward a more modern, simplified aesthetic in his final years.
Johanna Staude was a known figure in the artistic milieu of Vienna, and this portrait captures a sense of modern independence. The composition is cropped closely, focusing on the head and shoulders, which heightens the psychological presence of the sitter. The work remains unfinished in certain areas, particularly around the edges of the canvas, providing insight into Klimt's working process. This piece offers a clear view of the transition in Austrian painting during the early twentieth century, moving from the decorative excesses of the Secessionist period toward a more raw, individualistic mode of portraiture. It is a study in colour contrast and structural form, stripped of extraneous detail to focus on the character of the subject.
