A detailed seventeenth-century engraving of the astrologer John Gadbury, featuring celestial instruments and symbolic iconography.
This engraving by Thomas Cross depicts the English astrologer John Gadbury. The work functions as a frontispiece, a common format for seventeenth-century publications, intended to introduce the author to the reader. Gadbury is shown in a half-length pose, dressed in the sober attire of the period, with a plain collar and dark doublet. His hand rests upon an open book containing a geometric diagram, while his other hand touches a celestial globe. These objects identify his profession and his interest in the movement of the heavens.
The background features a stylised hill, a tree, and a sky filled with celestial bodies, including a crescent moon and a sun with a human face. These elements reflect the period's fascination with the intersection of science, mathematics, and astrology. The engraving technique employs fine cross-hatching to create volume and shadow, particularly in the drapery of the subject's clothing and the contours of the landscape. The composition is structured to place the subject at the centre, with the tools of his trade providing a clear narrative of his intellectual pursuits.
Thomas Cross was a prolific engraver during the mid-seventeenth century, known for his work on numerous book illustrations. His style is characteristic of the period, prioritising clarity and symbolic detail over naturalistic depth. The inscription at the base provides the subject's name, his birth year of 1627, and his age at the time of the portrait. This print offers a glimpse into the visual culture of the Restoration era, where the portrait served as a primary means of establishing the authority and identity of scholars and public figures. The work remains a fine example of the technical precision required in early modern printmaking, where every line was cut by hand into the copper plate to achieve the desired tonal range.
