A portrait of the artist's son, Jorge Manuel, depicted with his painting tools in the distinctive, expressive style of El Greco.
This portrait depicts Jorge Manuel Theotokopoulos, the son of the painter Domenikos Theotokopoulos, known as El Greco. Jorge Manuel followed his father into the profession, and here he is shown in the attire of a contemporary artist, holding a palette and brushes. The painting captures the younger Theotokopoulos with a direct gaze, his features rendered with the elongated proportions and expressive brushwork characteristic of his father's mature style in Toledo.
The subject wears a dark doublet and a prominent white ruff, a fashion common among the Spanish gentry and professional classes of the period. The contrast between the stark white of the ruff and the deep, shadowed tones of the background directs attention to the face and the tools of his trade. El Greco employs a limited, sombre palette, allowing the texture of the paint and the deliberate application of light to define the form of the sitter. The loose, fluid handling of the paint, particularly in the ruff and the hands, demonstrates the artist's departure from the rigid precision of earlier Renaissance portraiture.
Jorge Manuel was an active participant in his father's workshop, assisting with large-scale commissions and managing the studio after his father's death. This work functions as both a personal record of the family and a representation of the artistic identity within the Spanish courtly environment. The composition is restrained, focusing on the psychological presence of the sitter rather than elaborate surroundings. It remains a clear example of the portraiture style developed by El Greco during his final years in Spain, where he moved away from descriptive realism toward a more subjective, spiritualised interpretation of the human form.
