A psychological portrait of the Russian author Leo Tolstoy, painted by Ivan Kramskoy in 1873.
Painted in 1873, this portrait of Leo Tolstoy by Ivan Kramskoy captures the author during a period of immense creative output. Kramskoy, a leader of the Peredvizhniki movement, sought to move away from the rigid academic standards of the Imperial Academy of Arts. He prioritised psychological realism and the honest depiction of the Russian intelligentsia.
The composition is restrained. Tolstoy sits against a dark, neutral background, which directs the viewer's attention to his face. His expression is one of quiet intensity, reflecting the intellectual rigour associated with his work. Kramskoy uses a muted palette of browns, ochres, and deep greens to maintain a sombre, grounded atmosphere. The brushwork is precise, focusing on the texture of the subject's beard and the folds of his simple, dark garment. This choice of attire avoids the artifice of formal portraiture, aligning with Tolstoy's own philosophical shift toward simplicity and his rejection of aristocratic excess.
Kramskoy was commissioned by Pavel Tretyakov to paint this portrait for his collection. The artist spent time with Tolstoy at his estate, Yasnaya Polyana, to observe him in his natural environment. This proximity allowed Kramskoy to capture a sense of the writer's inner life rather than merely his physical likeness. The portrait remains a primary visual record of Tolstoy before his later years of spiritual crisis. It demonstrates the technical skill of the Peredvizhniki painters, who combined traditional European oil techniques with a focus on national identity and social observation. The work is held in the State Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow.
