A portrait of Li Yinquan by Xu Beihong, demonstrating the artist's signature blend of traditional Chinese ink techniques and Western anatomical modelling.
This portrait by Xu Beihong depicts Li Yinquan, a figure rendered with the artist's characteristic fusion of traditional Chinese brushwork and Western anatomical precision. Xu Beihong, a central figure in twentieth-century Chinese art, sought to modernise the national painting tradition by incorporating techniques of light, shadow, and structural accuracy learned during his studies in Paris.
In this work, the subject stands in a three-quarter view, dressed in a traditional white robe that occupies the majority of the composition. The artist employs a minimalist approach to the clothing, using fluid, calligraphic lines to define the folds of the fabric while leaving the interior space largely unadorned. This restraint directs the viewer's attention to the face, which is rendered with careful attention to modelling and psychological depth. The subtle shading around the eyes, nose, and beard provides a sense of volume that contrasts with the flat, linear treatment of the garments.
The inclusion of a walking stick adds a sense of groundedness to the figure, while the vertical inscription in the upper right corner provides historical context, identifying the sitter and the date of execution. The overall composition reflects the artist's philosophy of 'art for life', where the objective representation of the human form serves as a vehicle for capturing the character of the individual. The muted palette, dominated by the stark white of the robe and the natural skin tones, ensures that the focus remains on the personality and presence of Li Yinquan. This piece is an example of the artist's ability to balance the aesthetic values of classical ink painting with the rigour of Western academic portraiture, creating a synthesis that defined his career.
