A striking modernist portrait by Romanian artist Ion Theodorescu-Sion, featuring bold colour contrasts and expressive brushwork.
Ion Theodorescu-Sion was a central figure in the development of Romanian modernism during the early twentieth century. His work often synthesised European avant-garde movements with local aesthetic traditions. This portrait of the artist Lola Schmierer Roth displays his interest in colour theory and the expressive potential of the human face. The subject is rendered with a direct, penetrating gaze that commands the viewer's attention. Theodorescu-Sion employs a palette dominated by warm, earthy tones for the skin, which contrast sharply with the cool blue and white stripes of the garment beneath the coat.
The background is treated with a high degree of abstraction, using fragmented patches of red, blue, and green to create a sense of atmospheric energy. This approach moves away from traditional academic portraiture, favouring a more subjective interpretation of the sitter. The brushwork is visible and deliberate, adding a tactile quality to the surface of the canvas. The structure of the composition is balanced, with the sitter positioned centrally, yet the surrounding colour field creates a dynamic tension that prevents the image from feeling static.
Lola Schmierer Roth, herself an artist, is depicted with a sense of intellectual intensity. Theodorescu-Sion captures her likeness not merely as a physical record, but as an exploration of character. The interplay between the structured, striped clothing and the loose, almost chaotic application of paint in the background reflects the artist's ability to manage complex visual relationships. This piece provides a clear example of the stylistic experimentation that defined the Romanian art scene between the two world wars, demonstrating a departure from realism in favour of a more emotive and decorative visual language.
