A refined pastel portrait of the young Louis XV by the celebrated French artist Maurice Quentin de La Tour, capturing the elegance of the eighteenth-century French court.
Maurice Quentin de La Tour was a master of the pastel medium, a technique he elevated to the highest level of technical precision during the eighteenth century. This portrait captures Louis XV, the French monarch, during his youth. The artist employs a delicate application of pigment, allowing for subtle transitions in skin tone and the soft texture of the powdered wig. The subject wears a pale pink coat, contrasted by the bright blue sash of the Order of the Holy Spirit and the silver star pinned to his chest.
La Tour was known for his ability to capture the psychological presence of his sitters. In this work, the monarch is presented with a direct, calm gaze. The artist avoids heavy outlines, preferring to build form through light and shadow. This approach creates a sense of immediacy, as if the viewer is observing the subject in a private moment. The oval composition is typical of the period, focusing attention on the facial features and the refined attire of the royal court.
Pastel was a preferred medium for portraiture in the Rococo era because it allowed for a speed of execution that oil paint could not match. La Tour utilised this to his advantage, capturing the fleeting expressions of the French aristocracy. The soft, powdery finish of the medium remains visible in the original work, providing a tactile quality that is preserved in our high-resolution fine art prints. This portrait offers a glimpse into the aesthetic values of the French court, where elegance and refinement were paramount. The work remains a primary example of the artist's skill in rendering both the physical likeness and the social status of his subjects through a sophisticated use of colour and light.
