A refined eighteenth-century pastel portrait of the musician Anne-Jeanne Cassanéa de Mondonville by the master portraitist Maurice Quentin de La Tour.
Maurice Quentin de La Tour was the pre-eminent French portraitist of the eighteenth century, celebrated for his mastery of the pastel medium. This portrait depicts Anne-Jeanne Cassanéa de Mondonville, a musician and the wife of the composer Jean-Joseph Cassanéa de Mondonville. The subject is shown in a moment of quiet reflection, her hand resting near her cheek as she sits before a musical score.
La Tour utilised the soft, powdery nature of pastel to achieve a remarkable degree of realism in skin tones and fabric textures. The blue silk of her bodice, trimmed with dark fur, contrasts with the delicate lace at her collar and cuffs. The artist captures a sense of immediacy in her expression, suggesting a personality that is both intelligent and composed. The background remains dark and atmospheric, ensuring that the viewer focuses entirely on the subject and the musical manuscript behind her.
This work demonstrates the artist's ability to combine technical precision with psychological insight. La Tour often spent many sittings with his subjects, allowing him to observe their features and character with great care. The inclusion of the musical score serves as a specific reference to the subject's life and interests, grounding the portrait in her personal reality. The work remains a fine example of the French Rococo period, where the focus shifted toward intimate, personal portraiture that captured the spirit of the Enlightenment era. The soft blending of colours and the careful attention to light reflect the artist's dedication to his craft, making this a classic representation of eighteenth-century French portraiture.
