A 1943 portrait by Ilya Mashkov depicting Major-General A. R. Zlobin, rendered with textured brushwork and a stoic, realistic approach.
Ilya Mashkov, a founding member of the Jack of Diamonds group, produced this portrait during the latter stages of his career. By 1943, the artist had moved away from his earlier avant-garde experiments toward the more conventional requirements of the Soviet state. This work depicts Major-General A. R. Zlobin, a figure of authority within the medical services of the Red Army during the Second World War. The painting employs a heavy, textured application of paint, characteristic of Mashkov's mature style. The subject is rendered with a focus on psychological gravity, his weathered features and grey beard suggesting the weight of his wartime responsibilities. The uniform is painted with muted tones of grey and khaki, punctuated by the red piping and the metallic sheen of his medals. The background is a dark, atmospheric wash that pushes the figure forward, ensuring the viewer's attention remains fixed on the General's direct, unyielding gaze. Unlike the earlier, more decorative works for which Mashkov is known, this portrait adheres to the principles of Socialist Realism. It captures the subject with a sense of stoic endurance. The brushwork remains visible, providing a tactile quality to the surface of the canvas, which prevents the image from becoming overly polished or academic. The composition is straightforward, focusing on the head and shoulders to create an intimate yet formal encounter. This piece offers a view into the shift in Russian art during the mid-twentieth century, where the focus moved toward the representation of individuals serving the state. It remains a clear example of the artist's technical ability to convey character through a limited, sombre palette and a firm, confident hand.
