A refined portrait of the poet Minamoto no Muneyuki, featuring traditional Japanese calligraphy and ink work from the Kamakura period.
This work is a segment from the Fujifusa version of the Thirty-Six Poetic Immortals handscroll, a collection of portraits depicting celebrated Japanese poets. The subject, Minamoto no Muneyuki, is rendered in the traditional Yamato-e style, which prioritises fluid lines and a flattened perspective. The figure is shown in profile, wearing formal court attire, with his gaze directed upward. The ink work is precise, capturing the subtle contours of his face and the heavy, structured folds of his robes.
Beside the figure, the composition includes columns of elegant calligraphy, which provide biographical details and examples of the poet's work. This integration of text and image is a hallmark of the period, reflecting the high value placed on the synthesis of literature and visual art within the Japanese imperial court. The paper surface shows the natural ageing of the material, with muted earth tones and soft, neutral backgrounds that allow the dark ink of the figure and the script to remain the primary focus.
Attributed to Emperor Godaigo, this piece offers a glimpse into the aesthetic preferences of the fourteenth-century aristocracy. The simplicity of the composition avoids unnecessary ornamentation, relying instead on the balance between the negative space of the paper and the deliberate placement of the subject. The work functions as both a historical record and a piece of calligraphic art, preserving the memory of the poet while demonstrating the technical skill of the artist. The muted palette and the restraint in the brushwork are characteristic of the period, where the focus remained on the clarity of the line and the grace of the form.
