An expressive, unfinished portrait by Richard Gerstl, capturing his mother with raw, gestural brushwork and a moody, atmospheric palette.
This portrait of Maria Gerstl, the artist's mother, demonstrates the raw, unmediated approach to paint application that defined Richard Gerstl's brief career. Painted around 1907, the work remains in an unfinished state, exposing the raw canvas and the artist's rapid, gestural brushwork. Gerstl rejected the polished academic standards of his Viennese contemporaries, opting instead for a psychological intensity that prioritised the emotional state of the sitter over formal likeness.
The composition focuses tightly on the subject's face, which emerges from a dark, atmospheric background. Gerstl uses a palette of earthy tones, ochres, and deep blacks, applied with a heavy, calligraphic hand. The paint is thick, almost sculptural in places, creating a surface that records the physical movement of the brush. By leaving large sections of the canvas bare, Gerstl allows the viewer to see the process of construction, turning the portrait into a record of the encounter between painter and subject.
Gerstl's work is often associated with the early development of Austrian Expressionism. His refusal to smooth over the surface or refine the details of the clothing and background creates a sense of immediacy. The gaze of the sitter is direct and unflinching, contributing to the unsettling, honest quality of the piece. This portrait provides a clear view into the artist's method, where the act of painting becomes a vehicle for exploring the human condition. The lack of finish is not a sign of neglect, but a deliberate choice to maintain the energy of the initial observation. It remains a significant example of the shift towards subjective, emotive representation in early twentieth-century European art.
