This portrait by Théodore Géricault depicts the young Olivier Bro, son of General Victor Bro. Painted during the early nineteenth century, the work captures the child in a military-inspired costume, reflecting the martial atmosphere of the post-Napoleonic era in France. The boy holds a sabre over his shoulder, while his other hand rests upon the head of a large dog, which is shown with its mouth open in a snarling expression.
Géricault employs a restrained palette, focusing on muted greys, browns, and blacks to create a sombre, serious mood.
