A striking 1888 portrait by Vincent van Gogh, capturing a Provençal shepherd through bold colour contrasts and expressive, textured brushwork.
Painted in Arles in August 1888, this portrait depicts Patience Escalier, a local shepherd whom Van Gogh encountered during his time in the south of France. The work is a study in colour theory, utilising the contrast between the primary yellow of the hat and the deep blue of the background. Van Gogh applied paint with his characteristic impasto technique, creating a textured surface that directs the viewer's eye across the canvas.
The subject is rendered with a direct, unflinching gaze. His weathered features are articulated through short, rhythmic brushstrokes in shades of orange, red, and ochre. These warm tones stand against the cool, linear strokes of the blue background, which suggest a sense of movement. The shepherd wears a light green coat and a dark, patterned neckerchief, providing a bridge between the warm facial tones and the cool surroundings.
Van Gogh wrote to his brother Theo about his desire to paint portraits that would appear as apparitions to people a century later. He sought to capture the essence of his subjects through colour rather than photographic accuracy. This portrait is one of several studies of local figures from the Arles period, reflecting his interest in the rural inhabitants of Provence. The composition is tightly cropped, focusing entirely on the head and shoulders of the sitter to create an immediate, personal connection. The signature in the upper left corner is a deliberate inclusion, marking the work as a finished piece within his broader series of portraits from this productive summer.
