A detailed seventeenth-century engraving by Paulus Pontius, depicting the artist Peter Paul Rubens after a painting by Anthony van Dyck.
This engraving by Paulus Pontius depicts the celebrated Flemish painter Peter Paul Rubens. Pontius, a highly skilled printmaker, worked closely with the circle of Rubens and Anthony van Dyck to translate their painted compositions into the medium of copperplate engraving. The portrait is based on a painting by Anthony van Dyck, which captures Rubens in a moment of quiet contemplation.
Pontius employs a sophisticated system of hatching and cross-hatching to define the textures of the subject's clothing and the subtle modelling of his features. The light source, coming from the left, creates a clear distinction between the illuminated side of the face and the shadowed areas, a technique that adds volume to the figure. The drapery of the cloak is rendered with fluid, sweeping lines that suggest the weight and sheen of the fabric.
The inscription at the base, 'D. PETRVS PAVLVS RVBBENS EQVES', identifies the sitter and notes his status as a knight and advisor to the Spanish crown. This print is a fine example of the collaborative nature of the Antwerp art scene during the seventeenth century, where painters and engravers worked in tandem to disseminate the likenesses of prominent figures across Europe. The precision of the line work demonstrates the technical mastery required to achieve such tonal depth without the use of colour. This print remains a primary source for understanding the visual identity of Rubens as perceived by his contemporaries. The composition is balanced and restrained, focusing the viewer's attention on the expressive gaze of the artist.
