A detailed seventeenth-century portrait engraving of Wenceslas Coeberger, executed by Lucas Vorsterman I after a design by Anthony van Dyck.
This portrait engraving depicts Wenceslas Coeberger, a figure of significant administrative and artistic standing in the seventeenth-century Southern Netherlands. The work is part of the Iconography, a series of portraits of famous contemporaries initiated by Anthony van Dyck. Vorsterman, a master engraver, translated Van Dyck's painted study into this precise graphic medium.
Coeberger is shown in a three-quarter view, resting his arm upon a ledge. He wears the sober, dark attire typical of a high-ranking official or scholar of the period, featuring a stiff collar and a buttoned doublet. His expression is one of quiet authority, with a gaze directed towards the viewer. The background is kept relatively simple, with a draped curtain providing a sense of volume and spatial depth behind the sitter.
Vorsterman employs a sophisticated system of hatching and cross-hatching to define the textures of the fabric, the softness of the beard, and the contours of the face. The lighting is focused, creating a clear contrast between the illuminated features of the subject and the shadowed areas of the clothing. The inscription at the base identifies Coeberger as the Prefect of the Monts de Piété in Brussels and notes his previous role as a painter to the Archduke Albert. This print demonstrates the technical skill of the Flemish school of engraving, where the collaboration between painter and printmaker allowed for the wide dissemination of portraiture among the European elite. The clarity of the line work and the balanced composition reflect the formal standards of the Baroque era, prioritising a dignified representation of the individual.
