Vincent van Gogh's 'Portrait of Postman Roulin', painted in 1888, captures his friend Joseph Roulin with bold colour and expressive brushwork, reflecting the warmth and humanity of their relationship during Van Gogh's time in Arles.
Painted in 1888, Vincent van Gogh's 'Portrait of Postman Roulin' is one of several portraits he made of Joseph Roulin, a postman who became a close friend during Van Gogh's time in Arles. Roulin and his family were important figures in Van Gogh's life during a period of personal difficulty. The portraits are characterised by their bold colour and expressive brushwork, typical of Van Gogh's style. The painting depicts Roulin in his postal uniform, complete with a cap bearing the word 'Postes'. Van Gogh's use of colour is striking, with a light blue background contrasting with the dark tones of Roulin's coat and hat. The postman's face is rendered with a mix of greens, yellows, and oranges, reflecting Van Gogh's interest in using colour to convey emotion and character. The brushstrokes are visible and textured, adding to the painting's sense of immediacy and energy. Roulin's beard is a mass of swirling brushstrokes, giving it a lively, almost animated quality. The overall impression is one of warmth and humanity, capturing the essence of a man Van Gogh clearly respected and admired.
