A refined 1781 portrait by Dmitry Levitzky, capturing Praskovia Repnina with delicate brushwork and a focus on naturalistic expression.
Dmitry Levitzky, a master of the Russian portrait tradition, painted this likeness of Praskovia Repnina in 1781. The work captures the subject with a directness that avoids the excessive artifice common to the period. Levitzky focuses on the subtle play of light across the sitter's face, creating a sense of presence that feels immediate.
Praskovia Repnina is depicted in a three-quarter view, her expression calm and composed. The artist employs a restrained palette, allowing the soft sheen of the blue silk bodice and the delicate lace at her neckline to draw the eye. The dark, atmospheric background ensures that the focus remains entirely on the sitter, a technique Levitzky utilised to great effect throughout his career. Her hair is styled in the high, powdered fashion of the late eighteenth century, reflecting the aristocratic norms of the Russian court.
Levitzky was known for his ability to capture the individual character of his subjects rather than merely their social standing. In this portrait, the brushwork is precise yet fluid, particularly in the rendering of the fabric and the soft contours of the face. The inclusion of a blue bow and a decorative brooch adds a touch of colour to the composition, balancing the darker tones of the background. This piece provides a clear example of the technical skill that established Levitzky as a leading portraitist in Saint Petersburg during the reign of Catherine the Great. The work remains a fine example of eighteenth-century portraiture, demonstrating a balance between formal elegance and human observation.
