A detailed seventeenth-century engraving by Lucas Kilian depicting René I of Anjou, featuring heraldic elements and formal portraiture.
This engraving by Lucas Kilian depicts René I of Anjou, the fifteenth-century monarch known as the King of Naples. Kilian, a skilled printmaker from Augsburg, produced this work as part of a series documenting historical figures. The portrait is contained within an oval frame, a common convention for seventeenth-century portraiture that provides a sense of formal distance.
René is shown in profile, wearing a crown and a collar adorned with scallop shells, which are traditional symbols associated with pilgrimage and the Order of Saint Michael. His expression is composed, and his hair falls in soft curls around his shoulders. The artist employs precise hatching and cross-hatching techniques to define the contours of the face and the folds of the garment.
Below the central oval, the composition includes heraldic shields and a cartouche bearing the inscription PAS.A.PAS. This motto, often associated with René, is flanked by small figures, adding a decorative element to the base of the print. The upper portion of the sheet features the text XVI. REX NEAPOLITANVS, identifying the subject within the broader context of the series.
Kilian demonstrates a high level of technical control in this print. The lines are clean, and the shading creates a clear sense of volume without relying on excessive ornamentation. The work reflects the period's interest in historical documentation and the dissemination of royal imagery through the medium of print. As a museum-grade reproduction, this piece captures the fine detail of the original copperplate engraving, making it a suitable choice for those interested in early modern portraiture and the history of printmaking.
