A formal 1749 engraving by Jacques Nicolas Tardieu depicting the sculptor Robert Le Lorrain, complete with professional tools and academic titles.
This engraving by Jacques Nicolas Tardieu depicts the French sculptor Robert Le Lorrain. Created in 1749, the work served as Tardieu's reception piece for the Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture. The portrait is presented within a trompe l'oeil stone oval frame, a common device in eighteenth-century printmaking to provide a sense of physical presence and depth.
Le Lorrain is shown in a bust-length format, wearing a fur-lined coat and a cravat. His expression is composed and direct, reflecting the status of a man who held the title of Sculpteur ordinaire du Roy. The artist, Tardieu, demonstrates technical precision in the rendering of textures, particularly the contrast between the soft fur of the coat and the smooth, weathered appearance of the stone frame.
Below the oval frame, the composition includes a collection of sculptor's tools, such as a mallet, chisels, and a compass, alongside a rolled scroll. These items identify the sitter's profession and his academic standing. The inscription on the plinth provides the sitter's name and titles, confirming his role as a rector within the Academy. The print is based on an original painting by Donat Nonnotte. The clean, controlled lines of the engraving technique allow for a clear articulation of form and light, typical of the period's preference for clarity and formal dignity in portraiture. This print offers a glimpse into the professional identity of an eighteenth-century artist, documenting both the individual and the tools of his trade.
