A masterful example of American Realism, this 1902 portrait by Thomas Eakins captures Sebastiano Cardinal Martinelli with anatomical precision and psychological depth.
Thomas Eakins painted this portrait of Sebastiano Cardinal Martinelli in 1902. The work displays the characteristic rigour of Eakins, who was a dedicated observer of human anatomy and psychological presence. Martinelli, an Italian prelate who served as the Apostolic Delegate to the United States, is depicted in profile, seated in a high-backed wooden chair. The composition is austere, focusing on the subject's posture and the weight of his ecclesiastical garments.
Eakins utilised a restrained palette dominated by deep browns and blacks, which allows the singular splash of red from the cardinal's zucchetto and sash to draw the eye. The lighting is directional, casting soft shadows across the subject's face and hands, which are rendered with anatomical precision. Unlike the idealised portraiture common in the era, Eakins chose to capture the sitter with a sense of quiet gravity and physical reality. The background remains largely indistinct, suggesting a wood-panelled interior that does not distract from the figure.
This painting is representative of Eakins's later career, during which he produced a series of portraits of professional men, including doctors, scientists, and clergy. He avoided decorative flourishes, preferring to examine the character of his subjects through their physical bearing. The brushwork is controlled, reflecting his training in Paris under Jean-Léon Gérôme, yet it retains a distinct American sensibility. The portrait remains a study in light, shadow, and the quiet dignity of the human form, presented without artifice or sentimentality.
