A formal eighteenth-century engraving of Sophia Dorothea of Hanover, Queen of Prussia, featuring detailed line work and royal heraldry.
This engraving by Jodocus Egidius Krauss depicts Sophia Dorothea of Hanover, who served as the Queen of Prussia through her marriage to Frederick William I. The composition follows the conventions of early eighteenth-century royal portraiture, presenting the subject within a formal oval frame. This frame rests upon a stone-effect plinth, which bears the inscription 'SOPHIA DOROTHEA REINE DE PRUSSE' and features the royal coat of arms at the base.
The artist employs precise line work to define the textures of the Queen's attire, including the soft fur trim of her mantle and the delicate lace at her neckline. Her hair is styled in the fashion of the period, with soft curls framing the face. The background within the oval is rendered with fine, dense hatching to create a sense of depth, ensuring the figure remains the primary focus. The inclusion of the heraldic shield, complete with a crown, serves to identify the subject's status and political position within the Prussian court.
Krauss, a German engraver active during the early eighteenth century, produced this work as a formal record of the royal family. The print demonstrates the technical skill required for copperplate engraving, where the artist must carefully control the pressure and spacing of the burin to achieve varying tones and textures. This piece offers a clear view into the visual culture of the Prussian monarchy, documenting the appearance of a figure who occupied a specific position in European dynastic history. The work is presented here as a high-quality reproduction, maintaining the clarity of the original lines and the formal balance of the composition.
