A detailed silhouette portrait by Auguste Edouart, capturing the Abbott Lawrence family in their Boston library in 1841.
Auguste Edouart was a French silhouettist who gained recognition for his detailed cut-paper portraits during his residency in the United States between 1839 and 1849. This work depicts the Abbott Lawrence family within their Boston residence. Edouart moved beyond the simple profile portrait by incorporating elaborate interior settings, often using ink and wash to render the architectural details, furniture, and decorative objects of the room.
The composition captures the family in a domestic scene, with figures arranged across the library. The silhouettes are cut from black paper and mounted against a background where the artist has drawn the room's features, including the fireplace, bookshelves, and a harp. The inclusion of these environmental elements provides a record of the material culture of the period. Edouart was known for his ability to capture the likeness of his subjects through the precision of his cutting, focusing on the outline of the profile and the posture of the figures.
This piece reflects the mid-nineteenth-century interest in personal portraiture before the widespread adoption of photography. Edouart often kept duplicate copies of his silhouettes, which he referred to as his 'folios', allowing for a significant collection of his work to survive. The scene at Park Street offers a glimpse into the lifestyle of a prominent Boston family, documenting their social standing through the objects they chose to display in their private library. The contrast between the stark black silhouettes and the detailed, lighter-toned background creates a clear visual hierarchy, directing attention to the individual family members as they engage in various activities, from reading to playing music.
