A portrait of the artist's sister, Suzanne, rendered in the bold, expressive brushwork and non-naturalistic colour palette characteristic of early Fauvism.
This portrait depicts Suzanne Dufy, the sister of the artist, captured during the early years of Raoul Dufy's career. Painted around 1905, the work reflects the influence of the Fauvist movement, which prioritised expressive colour and bold brushwork over traditional academic representation. Dufy employs a palette dominated by primary tones, using unmixed pigments to construct the form of the sitter and the surrounding space.
The composition shows Suzanne seated, her figure rendered with rapid, visible strokes that convey a sense of immediacy. The background is composed of swirling blue marks, suggesting an atmospheric or interior setting without providing specific architectural detail. Her white blouse and red skirt are defined by thick applications of paint, where the texture of the canvas remains partially visible. This approach to paint application creates a sense of movement, a quality that would become a hallmark of Dufy's later work in various media.
Unlike the more rigid portraiture of the period, this piece focuses on the interaction between light and colour. The shadows are not rendered in black or grey, but through variations in hue, a technique central to the Fauvist approach. The sitter is positioned slightly off-centre, creating a casual, informal mood. The work provides insight into Dufy's early experimentation with the liberation of colour from its descriptive function. By rejecting the constraints of naturalistic shading, he creates a surface that is both decorative and emotive. This portrait remains a clear example of the stylistic shifts occurring in French art at the turn of the twentieth century, where the focus moved toward the subjective experience of the artist.
