A 1864 portrait by Franz Xaver Winterhalter depicting Varvara Dmitrievna Rimskaya-Korsakova, known for its soft lighting and detailed rendering of lace and silk.
Franz Xaver Winterhalter, a German painter known for his royal portraiture, completed this work in 1864. The subject is Varvara Dmitrievna Rimskaya-Korsakova, a prominent figure in the social circles of the Second French Empire. Winterhalter captures her in a moment of relaxed elegance, a departure from the rigid formality often associated with aristocratic portraiture of the mid-nineteenth century.
The composition focuses on the subject's direct gaze and her voluminous, dark hair, which she holds with one hand. She wears an off-the-shoulder gown constructed from layers of white lace and silk, accented by pale blue ribbons. The artist employs a dark, atmospheric background that pushes the figure forward, creating a sense of depth and focus on the textures of the fabric and the softness of the skin. Winterhalter's technique demonstrates his ability to render light as it plays across different surfaces, from the sheen of the silk to the fine details of the lace trim.
Varvara Rimskaya-Korsakova was celebrated for her beauty and her unconventional style, often referred to as the 'Venus of the Tuileries'. This portrait reflects the fashion and social mores of the period, providing a glimpse into the aesthetic preferences of the European elite during the 1860s. The painting remains a representative example of Winterhalter's skill in capturing the likeness and presence of his sitters, maintaining a balance between technical precision and a sense of individual character. The work is currently held in the collection of the Musée d'Orsay in Paris.
