A 1631 engraving by Claude Mellan, capturing the likeness of the Italian nobleman Vincenzo Giustiniani through the artist's signature single-line shading technique.
This engraving by Claude Mellan depicts the Italian nobleman and art collector Vincenzo Giustiniani. Created in 1631 during the artist's time in Rome, the work demonstrates Mellan's technical mastery of the burin. He is known for his singular approach to shading, which relies on a single, continuous line that swells and tapers to create volume and texture, rather than the traditional cross-hatching methods common among his contemporaries.
Giustiniani is presented within an oval frame, a standard format for seventeenth-century portraiture. His expression is direct, and his gaze engages the viewer with a sense of authority. The details of his attire, including the stiff collar and the buttons of his doublet, are rendered with precision. Below the portrait, a cartouche contains the Latin inscription identifying the subject, Vincentius Iustinianus, alongside the artist's signature and the date of production.
Mellan spent several years in Italy, where he absorbed the influence of the Roman school. His ability to model form through the manipulation of line weight allows for a clarity that distinguishes his prints from the more painterly effects achieved by other engravers of the period. This portrait serves as a record of the appearance of one of the most significant patrons of the arts in the early seventeenth century, whose collection included works by Caravaggio and other masters of the era. The print remains a clear example of the technical rigour applied to portraiture in the Baroque period, capturing both the likeness and the social standing of the sitter through disciplined, economical mark-making.
