A refined graphite and charcoal profile portrait of American naturalist William Dandridge Peck, executed by French artist Charles Balthazar Julien Févret de Saint-Mémin.
This portrait depicts William Dandridge Peck, an American naturalist and the first professor of natural history at Harvard University. The work is attributed to Charles Balthazar Julien Févret de Saint-Mémin, a French artist who became well-known for his profile portraits during his residency in the United States between 1793 and 1814. Saint-Mémin utilised a physiognotrace, a mechanical device that assisted in capturing the precise profile of a sitter, which he then refined with graphite and charcoal on paper.
The composition follows the strict profile format common in the artist's oeuvre. Peck is shown facing left, wearing a high-collared coat and a cravat, reflecting the formal attire of the early nineteenth century. The artist employs subtle shading to define the contours of the face, the bridge of the nose, and the texture of the hair. The background remains plain, ensuring the focus stays entirely on the subject's features. This approach provides a clear record of the sitter's appearance, typical of the portraiture produced for the American middle and upper classes during this period.
Saint-Mémin's technique often involved creating a large-scale drawing from which he would produce smaller copperplate engravings. This specific work captures the delicate tonal transitions achievable through his mastery of dry media. The portrait serves as a historical document of a significant figure in early American scientific circles, presented with the clarity and restraint characteristic of the Neoclassical influence on portraiture at the time. The framing, while likely a later addition, complements the formal nature of the profile study, maintaining the focus on the subject's intellectual and social standing.
