A detailed seventeenth-century copperplate engraving by Lucas Kilian, depicting William I of Sicily within a formal heraldic frame.
This engraving by Lucas Kilian depicts William I of Sicily, a monarch of the Hauteville dynasty. Kilian, a skilled printmaker from Augsburg, utilised the precise techniques of copperplate engraving to render the monarch with formal authority. The portrait is contained within an oval frame, a common convention for seventeenth-century royal iconography, which separates the subject from the surrounding decorative elements.
The composition includes heraldic shields at the base, flanked by small figures, which provide context regarding the royal lineage and the religious associations of the period. The Latin inscription, 'Hoc Signo Tuta', suggests a reliance on divine protection, a frequent theme in royal portraiture of the era. Kilian employs varied line weights to create texture, particularly in the rendering of the ermine-trimmed mantle and the metallic sheen of the crown. The cross-hatching in the background provides depth, ensuring the figure remains the primary focus of the viewer.
Kilian was known for his technical proficiency, often producing works that served as illustrations for historical or genealogical texts. This print demonstrates his ability to balance the rigid requirements of formal portraiture with the decorative flourishes characteristic of the Baroque period. The attention to detail in the facial features and the drapery of the garments reflects the high standards of print production in early seventeenth-century Germany. This piece offers a glimpse into the methods used to disseminate the images of historical figures to a wider audience during the early modern period.
